About this site

The site showcases students’ work for the courses “JPL355: Higher intermediate Japanese (Online): Issues in Contemporary Japan” and “JAS355: Critical Issues in Globalizing Japan (online PBL course)” at Akita International University (AIU) in Japan. Throughout these courses, AIU students and exchange students from all over the world jointly conducted online interviews regarding the work styles of people working in Japan and beyond. Each group prepared an interview article in both Japanese and English.

This site is managed by the students and instructors of JPL/JAS 355 courses, and not by Akita International University.

About the website name

We first started this online interview project to investigate the different work styles of Japanese/non-Japanese people residing in Japan – especially in Akita, where our university is located. However, what we learned from our interviewees not only concerned their work styles, but also their views of life.

While many of our interviewees work in Akita, some groups took advantage of the online format by interviewing people currently working outside of Akita or who have no relation to Akita whatsoever. However, we decided to keep “Akita” as the website name, as we, including those who have never been here, came to have a special attachment to Akita through this interview project.

We hope you enjoy our articles and that they help you understand different work styles in Japan and think about your own work and life.
